My 'full' Orelo DIY attempt

Hi all,

This is my first post on this forum, but I've been following for a while, especially regarding the Orelo projects.
I've had the chance to listen to the Orelo at Bert's, and decided to have a go at building a pair of these.

It's been a couple of weeks now, I sure did underestimate the time it takes to build one of these, and today I finally got to perform the first tests

I still have to put the back panels on, veneer this first Orelo and obviously the mid-high Oris horn is still missing, but the first test was successful.

I haven’t been able to measure anything so far, but based on the sound quality they should measure just fine.
Very nice and deep bass response while very clean and well controlled

I’m looking forward to building the second one and fine-tune everything in combination with the Oris horns.
As I can only work on them during the weekend it will probably take a few more weeks, but it’s certainly worth.

Hereby some pictures:

Thanks a lot Bert for the design and all the help you’ve provided.

Best regards,
Diederik

It is not just the size.. (reply)

...its the whole concept of the Orelo that makes the difference.

The Orelo fires a lot more energy forward (boosted) compared to the rear energy giving it less a cancellation problem (between rear(wall) and front waves) compared to a normal open panel design.

Less issues with placement and less issues with phase problems as a result.

This means that I can make a smaller Orelo being 50cm wide (same size as the Quasar as an example) giving a better performance (more dB's in the bass) compared to a flat design.

Looking better too...

Orelo vs. Quasar? (reply)

I'm supposing that the wings help to "load" the lower end of the frequency spectrum. The FR difference between the plain baffle and the 'winged' baffle seems to show that fact. The issue will be, how small of a wing can we get away with, thus reducing the footprint of the entire thing.

Orelo vs. Quasar? (reply)

Hi Rudy,

The wings certainly make a difference.

The thickness does make a difference in rigidy but the wings basically do the same making it all more stiff. Another design feature for the Quasar is that you can cover the whole so it looks like a normal flat speaker without anything sticking out. Most women do not like to see the techical parts...

For the rest the Quasar is just a "simple" OB speaker.

Orelo vs. Quasar? (reply)

Hi Rudy,

You should know this yourself... imagine the Orelo without wings which is then basically the same as the Quasar.

Bert

Bert,

I was aware of the basic performance based on my outside measurements. I did not know if the thickness of the Quasar had any positive effect on the low end which is where I mostly saw a difference between the baffle alone and the wings added on.

The wings certainly make a difference.

Orelo vs. Quasar?

Bert,

I was looking into various open baffle designs and ran into something called the Quasar. A quick Google search led me right back here to your Quasar MKII design. What a funny coincidence!

So, how do you find the comparison between your designs? Granted, your Orelo has 4 drivers, but am curious as to the performance difference of 1/2 an Orelo and the Quasar.

Very interesting!

My pleasure! (reply)

Bert,
Glad to hear you are continuing to look at the design. Great idea on seeing how small a design you can get away with. Based on my baffle alone measurements, I think it should be possible to shrink the design and keep the performance.

At some point, I might look at that myself just for fun. The way I built mine, it will be easy to keep the baffle and change out wings ad desired.

Hi Rudy,

Thank you for all your help and the great idea.

Glad to be helpful with good working out ideas... in the meantime there were several smaller "Orelino's" being designed in my head already, very soon I will start cutting and experimenting further for those with a low WAF using the advantages of the basic principles used.

Enjoy listening!

The bottom line (reply)

Bert,
Your little idea is just fantastic for use with an Oris horn. This was perfect for me since I use a subwoofer from 20-70Hz. The DIY Orelo picks up from 70-200Hz or 70-750Hz depending on which channel.

Your design works extremely well, very clean and efficient. I ended up having to reduce the sensitivity on all three amplifiers powering the DIY Orelo's when I was running frequency response plots.....just proved that the Orelo concept is more efficient than the ported enclosures I was using.

Thank you for all your help and the great idea.

The center channel DIY Orelo will work just fine. Here is a raw plot of the frequency response. Overall no problem EQing minor issues. Darn good response considering this was taken inside a room, 3 feet away from the baffle.

I am crossing from the DIY Orelo to my HF horn at 780Hz based on the performance of both sets of drivers.

Here's the final product...for the time being. Based on the plots and frequency response, these things are still making me scratch my head. The response is just amazing for an open baffle system. No problem with using it for the center channel.
