Bass reflex v Karlson v Onken? (BD-Design)

by GC, Friday, October 28, 2005, 09:58 (6754 days ago)

Hi

To mate to a horn (with bi-amping), covering about 40 - 500 Hz ~

Priorities: Smoothness & minimum distortion, rather than efficiency.

Where is the best description of the theory of the latter two ?

Onken = QB4 with Vent of same surface area as the driver > benefit reduced whooshing noises +?

Karlson = better dynamics 80-150 hz??

(Using appropriate drivers for each) Anyone heard or read about a comparison?

Thanks

Richard

Bass reflex v Karlson v Onken?

Hi Richard,

If you want smoothness then use a reflex. Either a normal reflex or an Onken based reflex system. No all bass drive units are suitable for an onken baswed reflex though, most will have a port too long to fit the parameters.

Usually high sensitive drivers will work in them, low sensitive subwooferwoofers can't be used (why would you want to use those anyhow...).

Onken = QB4 with Vent of same surface area as the driver > benefit reduced
whooshing noises +?

Better dynamics, vent area's larger than 30% of the cone area will do just as well unless you push them to the limit!

Ciao,

Bert
