Fe207e in Oris System (BD-Design)

by GC, Tuesday, December 06, 2005, 19:30 (6687 days ago)

hi,
i'm just finishing my la scala diy bass horns. i still need somethin for the higher frequencies, so i thought about the oris 150.
last week i got a new pair of fostex fe207e's on ebay, they were really cheap... :-)
Now im asking myself if the 207 is as recommended as the 206 to drive them in the oris 150 ??? what are differences in sound?

would the combination of la scala and oris 150 with fe207 work out or do i
have to make some modifications?
please help

best regards
thomas

Hi thomas,

Good idea, that will work well but...

The FE207E's have a weaker magnet system and a frequency response too flat for use in the Oris horns. You will need to add a tweeter for the high frequencies above 8-10kHz for some freshness.

would the combination of la scala and oris 150 with fe207 work out or do i
have to make some modifications?

The mounting ring needs to modified to fit the Fostex drive units (see picture - similar to what is needed for the FE206E's) and a tweeter will be needed for more freshness in the sound.

No problem!

and a tweeter will be needed for more freshness in the sound.

any recommendations? not too expensive...

so, next problem will be the connection to the amp(s)...
an active crossover network won't do, cos i would need at least 4 to 6 mono amps, so what about a standard crossover network (with just one amp)?

i already thought about driving the la scalas by some subwoofer modules, this makes control, eq etc. easier - and the oris horns by my stock mono blocks...
any other suggestions?

Hi Thomas,

http://www.bd-design.nl/index.html?lang=en-uk&target=d80.html#p48

The FT17H shown there is a very nice and cheap tweeter. The sensitivity is a bit lower than the Fostex in the Oris 150 though but reducing their sensitivity would bring them back in balance.

an active crossover network won't do, cos i would need at least 4 to 6
mono amps, so what about a standard crossover network (with just one
amp)?

That would be a very hard case to blend all together... the Oris horn with the Fostex tweeter would not be too hard but the bass will give the problems.

Your own next thoughts would be a better starting point.

i already thought about driving the la scalas by some subwoofer modules,
this makes control, eq etc. easier - and the oris horns by my stock mono
blocks...

Yep, that is what I would do in your situation...

i also think about building a singular enclosure for my 207e's.
i have many sheets of wood left anyway...

this would be the best solution for my the 207 isnt it?
or does the 206 also sounds better in the singular?

Hi Thomas,

In some ways the FE206E's will do better in the Singular but with the FE207E's there isn't much fuzz around tweaking the tonal balance.

Simply "plug" them in the system. move a bit with the enclosures and let them play.
