How to incorporate Behringer 2496 as EQ? (BD-Design)

I am a big fan of the Behringer 2496 as a device to eq bass frequencies. I currently use its parametric eq abilities to tune sub in my small room. One day I'd like to get a set of Oris horns but wondered how I could incorporate this little toy into the setup.

The way I use it now is to run a analog connection from my preamp to the 2496, have the 2496 do the EQ in the through an A/D conversion, then using the 2496 D/A to output a corrected analog signal to my sub.

Could I do this with the bass system of the Oris horns? I'd appreciate anyone's input!
Thanks!

Is this the Ultracurve? The one with the RTA?

If so, then you can use it in any setup. Between pre and amp would be a good location as you can alternate any source and still have the benefit of room correction with the PEQ.

How to incorporate Behringer 2496 as EQ?

Well I'd rather not use it in between my pre and power because the analog components in the DEQ2496 are pretty unimpressive and the resulting sonic presentation is equally unimpressive.

I'd rather use the Behringer for my bass only. As opposed to the full range implementation, on the bass frequencies I did not notice a decreased sound quality.

Can I use the DEQ2496 (yes the one with RTA though I would use more advanced techniques to get my curve) on the bass unit only?

Thanks

Hi Vik

I'd rather use the Behringer for my bass only. As opposed to the full
range implementation, on the bass frequencies I did not notice a decreased
sound quality.

Hmm... in my case, I thought the Behringer did tighten up the bass and also offered a wider soundstage with the room correction PEQ and GEQ setup.

It should work if you are using it for the bass bins only, but a low pass filter would be required to filter off frequencies where you would cross to the horns. Ideally, the filter should have some attenuation capabilities in order to match the different sensistivity between the horn and the bass units.

I've not tried the above though, so experimentation is required ;-) . My future plan is to build the onken cabs on Bert's site with the 25W vifa drivers. This will be driven by 120W chip amps with the input signal going thru an active filter.

Btw, what is the reason for using PEQ on the Behringer for the bass? I used PEQ to flatten the peaks after doing a sweep of my room mode.

Cheers

Hi Vik,

2496, have the 2496 do the EQ in the through an A/D conversion, then using
the 2496 D/A to output a corrected analog signal to my sub.

Yes, this can be done and I think that this is the only "good" way to EQ bass problems if re-placement of the speakers is not possible or doesn't help.

One remark though, I would add a filter (passive or passive line-level) to filter all frequencies out of the frequency range not used by the bass. Think of it as a standard system and later you can add the Behringer to "repair" room conditons.

One remark about EQ, only reduce peaks, never amplify dips...

Ciao,

Bert
