hi bert

,i live in brazil, and want to built speakersystem with round tractrix horns .
i know somebody who can make them for me in aluminium cast. do u have experience with the tonal characteristics of aluminium ? i know that some use aluminium horns, like ale from japan, or magico from the us. i want to use a aer driver, but i need to know the diameter for the screws, can u tell me ? soon i will need to buy some crowns from u. i was listening til now with altec 288-16g drivers, on 1003 altec horns. they sound a quit horny. do u know the difference abought these and aer oris combination ? dont u think that a supertweeter, like coral h100, could help on the aer in the high frequencies ?

regards Angelo

Hi Angelo,

How a aluminium horn will sound depends on the alloy used, the thickness (and the variation in this) and the size. This varies for creating a horn that is ringing like a bell (most probably) or one that is more quiet.

Best is to make the horn as thin as possible (1-3mm) so that you will be able to dampen the horn with bitumen or something similar. Making it thicker then it is almost impossible to dampen it!

What is the size of the horn you have in mind?

i want to use a aer driver, but i need to know the diameter for the screws, can u tell me ?

An Oris horn with AER drivers or any other suitable drivers will not sound horny, what you hear from the Altec horn is an uneven frequency response where the midrange is probably too strong.

Which AER drive units do you have?

dont u think that a supertweeter, like coral h100, could help on the aer
in the high frequencies ?

I don't know the Coral tweeter but I personally do not need a tweeter within my Oris system.

Ciao,

Bert

Hello Bert

good advice, thanks ! i can make it also in iron, or even bronce, do u have a idea, what would be the best material ?

What is the size of the horn you have in mind?

i thought to make two horns . first one for a aer md3 driver, same size as
oris 200 horn, and a bigger one, 1m diameter, for mid bass.

i want to use a aer driver, but i need to know the diameter for the

screws, can u tell me ?

thanks regards Angelo

Dear Angelo,

Best material is non metal....

i want to use a aer driver, but i need to know the diameter for the
screws, can u tell me ?

Draw a square of 14cm x 15,2 cm. On the edges of this square are the holes of the driver to mount them. Use 4-5mm screws or bolts for that...
