Speakers with AER mkI + Supravox 285GMF (Off Topic)

by SoundOfMusic @, Tuesday, April 11, 2006, 10:54 (6583 days ago)

Hello!

Got a pair of AER mkI and a pair of Supravox 285GMF.

Would appreciate suggeststions for speakers designs with this drivers.

I am allways open, to any suggestions, but have experienced a lot of designs, so I have an idea of my listening preferences.
This means I till now I did not find any speaker using BR, TL or what ever resonat system that I really liked and so I prefer aperiodic and closed enclosures - at least till now. Have no real experience with OB.

For the moment I also would prefer a passive design.

By the way, I read the AER mkI has a rising response on the heights, but the response graphs of AER don´t show that!?

Many thanks in advance,
Markus

Hi Markus,

Would appreciate suggeststions for speakers designs with this drivers.

You could build the first Quasar which used the same drivers? Using a passive serial filter will work pretty well..

Yes, the AERmkI has a rising respons but only on axis. You should listen about 5-10 degrees off-axis and then you'll have a pretty flat frequency curve.

Regarding published frequency plots, 99,5% of the manufacturers are showing much nicer (usually highly smoothened) frequency responses than they are in reality.

Ciao,

Bert

Speakers with AER mkI + Supravox 285GMF

Hello Bert!

Thank you very much for your quick response.
I did not know, that the first Version of the Quasar was equipped with these drive units.
By the way, the 285GMF seemes to be originally from you, as I got it 2nd hand in a Box with your stickers. Is that possible?

Would you be so kind and provide the construktion details.
If the crossover is complex, would it be possible to order it from you and for how much?

Kind regards,
Markus

See this post for some more info...

Yes, that is possible. I did sell Supravox in the past...

Would you be so kind and provide the construktion details.

Here is a drawing, I hope it makes sense...

It is a simple 1st order serial filter using a 12mH coil (low resistance!) and a 100uF capacitor. You might need a notch to tame the high frequencies though, here is a link to the schematic of that.
