Update Oris 250 with compression drivers (BD-Design)

by Bert @, Sunday, April 23, 2006, 18:50 (6575 days ago)

Hi All,

I have played a lot with the new setup and tweaked it with little steps along the way. I also tried some rather different ways trying to find ways for improvements (reducing filter parts) but I always ended with the setup configuration I started with.

Must have been a good start....

The system as it is playing today is a system that has all an audiophile ever wanted and searched for. It is a point source, is extremely sensitive, its very dynamic, its extremely clean sounding, its extremely detailed, its very sweet, it can play very loud, it plays effortless, it probably plays music the way the musicians want it to be, its perfect!

I can't detect any faults or hear any aNoying artifacts anymore and the tonal balance is the same regardsless where I am in the listening room...

I think I hit the jackpot with these new horns!

Ciao,

Bert

Thinking out loud...

by Bert @, Sunday, April 23, 2006, 19:53 (6575 days ago) @ Bert

.... about something being perfect.

My main goal in audio has always been to enjoy music but being a perfectionist I also wanted to create a system that is technically perfect, at least to my standards and critism. This does not mean that what I feel that is perfect will give you the same feeling.

Music is emotion and with the right feeling, the right environment, the right equipment, the right recording and the right emotional state of the listener is what makes music to come alive. Giving you the thrill to enjoy music!

Some people only need basic equipment to enjoy music, others do need more. Probably more and more when time passes but as long as things do not destract and pull you into the music then it is not needed to seek for a better or "ultimate" system as main goal. It usually is more fun to take little steps at the time and built things up accordingly simply because your own standards will usually change after a while.

At this moment I am extremely happy about the achieved "technical" results and this feeling is partly responsible why I love what I am hearing for being so perfect in everything. Who knows how I will feel about this "perfect" system after a few months... only time can tell.

It will be at least my Reference for things to come...

Nevertheless, please be welcome to explore the Oris Swing system, just to hear if this "wolf in sheep's clothing" gives you the same thrill as it gives to me at this moment.

Ciao,

Bert

Thinking out loud...

by Rudolf150 @, Sunday, April 23, 2006, 22:38 (6575 days ago) @ Bert

... and listening loud (it surely had high dB-design to it  ).

I volunteered to be a guinypig last night, and listened to the setup with BMS drivers.
To cut a long story short; today, I just could not stop thinking about the setup I heard.
It is a lean, clean, music making machine !

Bert, will you ever stop us surprising ????? :prankster:

Update Oris 250 with compression drivers

by GC, Monday, April 24, 2006, 21:35 (6574 days ago) @ Bert

Hi all....

I have been visiting Bert this weekend to learn more about his findings with the new ORIS 250 horns as well as checking out the BMS drivers capabilities.

I will split my comments in two:

ORIS 250/AER MD3/new phase plug:

Compared to my own 200's this horn/driver combo shows much more openness, more free highs and a quite bigger listening window. This said without any sacrifice has been made on the tonal warmth etc.
The image depth has been considerably improved due to less directivity. The slightly pronounced horn "honk" in the 200's has completely disappeared.

So for all AER lowers here is really something to go for. I would not hesitate to upgrade my horn right away. Never have the MD3's sounded more free and tonal correct, now able to show it's full potential.

I assume the qualities of the 250's will cover Lowther and Fostex drivers as well.

Bravo Bert. You have again lifted the enjoyment of fullrange drivers to a new level.

Then.....

ORIS 250/BMS 4592ND compression drivers:

I have never ever in my entire life heard anything like it.......and that is to my big surprise.

Let me put it this way: I had rather big reservations prior to my arrival to Berts place. First of all I heard very few compression driver/horn combos that didn't somehow sounded harsh, over emphasised in the mid's and were sounding "horny". One of the few I heard sounding somehow OK was the TAD drivers. (Costs half a space shuttle).
Nevertheless no bass system could ever "follow" the speed of the compression drivers as all of those caNot reach lower than 500-800 Hz. (Except the wild GOTO drivers etc).

As I knew Berts new 250's in the 2" throat version is relatively deep, I had fears that this could not go completely right. Could the treble travel unhurt through the horns? Would it be coloured?

My fears were shamely put to bed by the new combo. Huhhh....my Goodness.

They excels in any department showing extremely high resolution, low distortion, extreeeeeeeeem dynamics, tonal balance, excellent stereo image in wide, height, depths and "to die for" correct timbre.
I don't know how to describe this horn as I have used all my vocabulary in praising the ORIS 250/200 with AER's for their wonderful merits. But I have to redefine my words now.

I heard the new combo in the SWING set-up. The SWING bass matches the speed and tone of the 250/BMS perfectly. Seamless cross-over, one whole point source is in front of you.

So what is left? A musical experience that transcend what I have heard through my 52 years old life.
This system takes sound reproduction into a completely new dimension. A new reference is born.

I can only recommend as many of you as possible to go to Bert and listen. You really have to hear this by yourself.

Update Oris 250 with compression drivers

Hi WS,

I am interested in a dual driver version. Will you be looking into that?

The BMS drivers I am working with now are "dual" compression drivers (coaxial design with tweeter mounted within the midrange).

Unless you mean something else with your question...?

Update Oris 250 with compression drivers

by wsin @, Tuesday, May 02, 2006, 01:54 (6567 days ago) @ Bert

Hi Bert

I mean using 2 drivers per horn. There may be benefits. The horn may be shorter and have more effortless dynamics.

Hi ws,

shorter and have more effortless dynamics.

This has crossed my mind for drivers less capable to go as low as the BMS drivers, just to add some headroom below. I do see more advantage in using two horns as they are though (in d'Apolito) with a tweeter in between both.

This gives the same extra headroom (even a bit more due to the larger horn mouth area) and makes the choice for midrange drivers less critical.

Combining two drivers in one horn will give problems in the high frequencies, a separate tweeter will then be needed anyway.

Update Oris 250 with compression drivers

by Bert @, Tuesday, May 02, 2006, 10:27 (6567 days ago) @ wsin

Hi ws,

Thanks for the reply. When are you going to market these horns and thoughts on pricing?

As soon as all things are sorted out then these will be marketed. The price for the horns will be the same as for the other series (854 Euro the pair excluding VAT and excluding shipping costs). The final assembly construction is finished and already available. The last final tweaks to the filters are almost done and when the final layout and the price for the needed parts for the filters are calculated then I will upload all information to my website.

In principle people can buy just the horns as complete DIY-kit or as package deal with filter and BMS driver included. Filters will not be sold without the drivers and only usefull in combination with the Oris 250 horns, these filters are tuned to the driver itself and will receive the same serial number as the driver.

The first ordered compression driver horns are already at the painter along with the Oris 250 for 6,5" drivers and for 8" drivers, when these are back (2 weeks) then I can take some nice pictures to show them to the public.

It won't be long now!

Ciao,

Bert
