Oris enthusiasts too - white bass driver (Off Topic)

by fu_man @, Tuesday, April 25, 2006, 14:37 (6548 days ago)

C'mon Oris owners/ wannabes..
What do you think about white bass drivers at the back of the bass horn?
See my Quasar post below!

BTW: congratulations Bert on the new 250 - sounds like you had a lot to resolve. Another speaker to add to the dreams list!

Oris enthusiasts too - white bass driver

by Scott, Wednesday, April 26, 2006, 17:46 (6547 days ago) @ fu_man

Hi Fu-man...rather than white BD-15's why don't you just order your Fostex drivers from Decware and get them in black like I did. I am building 2 pair of Quasars and am very happy the the Decware version of the Fostex. Just a thought...

Yep, but they look much better in person...and there have been a few changes. It's worth giving Steve Deckert a call.

Thanks for the replies, I was starting to feel terribly lonely.

Scott, you are building two pairs? I am desperate to know your impressions. i haven't seen a single review whatsoever. (other than the guy who loves the Mark 1's and has posted a compelling commentary) I didn't know if even one pair of Mk11's had been built. How far away are you on hooking them up?

I like your suggestion regarding the Fostex but for me it doesn't quite address my issue. It's not so much that the full range doesn't match the bass drivers, but that the black bass drivers don't optimally suit the baffles.
Looking at the Quasars from the front the bass drivers dominate, and the width of the baffle between the driver and the side of the baffle seems too narrow by proportion. I wouldn't want to widen the baffle because it would alter the sound, plus make the whole speaker less domestically acceptable. (Bigger)
Unless of course the baffles are built in black. Then the units disappear, which is a good effect and there is no real issue. But i don't really want big black speakers, and I do really want a light wood finish. Similar to Berts images, and many of the Oris owners who have used light wood bass enclosures with white Oris horns. In this case white bass drivers on light wood would be similar to black drivers on a black baffle... except way more porn! Sorry, classy.

I think the reference Oris horn, Swing etc would also benefit. For example, that reference Oris image on the home page: the black driver at the back of the white horn would be very unified in white.. the most benefit I think would be for the Quasar. Already a fine looking speaker - the white drivers would be an aesthetic coup.

This is in no way, what so ever, at all, a criticism of what Bert has, and continues to achieve. I am really grateful that Bert offers his systems as DIY which makes his outstanding products almost affordable (compared to "no way on earth I could ever afford that "brands)
To qualify - I have never heard any of Berts products - but I have read favourable review from owners who have compared them to other front loaded horn speakers which i have heard and loved. (in the "no way on earth I could ever afford that" category)

I don't mean to be repetitive- but would love to know if anyone else agrees, or not?

Hi fu_man,

width of the baffle between the driver and the side of the baffle seems
too narrow by proportion. I wouldn't want to widen the baffle because it
would alter the sound, plus make the whole speaker less domestically
acceptable. (Bigger)

A thin cover (veneered in the same wood) in front of the drivers will make the 15" drivers look like 12" drivers and at the same time you could cover the ugly black frame of the Fostex...

Real DIY-ers are supposed to be able to think of such simple solutions...

I don't mean to be repetitive- but would love to know if anyone else
agrees, or not?

You're not the only one, I have had more of these requests. If money was not an issue then I would have had BD15's with white cones and white painted frames made... still with the yellow sticker though!

First I need to earn back some money for the investments made in the new series of horns and other new projects already running. People should buy more from me to speed things up...

Ciao,

Bert

Hi Bert,

Bert wrote: People should buy more from me to speed things up...

so... when will we have the price for the Orphean? I have for many years wished i could buy an Oris system. I had given up and figured that the Quasar might be a good second choice. But if i can't have white bass drivers ( ) and if the Orphean might be more affordable...OMG might it finally be within my reach? Okay I know I am being impatient, but am i right that the compression drivers for the new 250 are much cheaper than the Lowther and AER drivers, yet this system is giving you the joy? If the 250 horn is the same price as the other horns and the driver is cheaper - what of the other components that will make up the Orphean? Am I missing something here? A new product can't be cheaper than previous models!?!

Our exchange rate on the other side of the world here is slipping quick against the Euro... the anticipation is killing me.

Oh, and by the way:

I am a designer, but I'm not a "real DIY-er"... if i were i would probably be one of those guys asking you heaps of questions with no intention of ever buying any of your products. truth is, if i buy a DIY kit I'll have to find someone to do at least the electronic work for me... i hardy know which is the hot end of a soldering iron. I'm only looking at DIY to reduce costs, not the least being shipping a huge wooden box to the opposite side of the world.

it's all very exciting...fingers crossed.

Hi fu_man,

Bert wrote: People should buy more from me to speed things up...

I am very close to finalising the whole design and solved 99.9% of problems that might occur for the DIY-er.

The filter is done in the basics, I am now trying different brands and materials for the used parts to see which combinations give the most musical peformance for their price.

When all is done then I can calculate exactly how much things will cost and next week I do hope to see all the painted horns back here so that I can take pictures and when all is ready then I can upload all to my wesite.

Not more than 2 weeks from now and you'll will know.

...and if the Orphean might be more affordable...OMG might it finally be within my reach? Okay I know I am being impatient, but am i right that the compression drivers for the new 250 are much cheaper than the Lowther and AER drivers, yet this system is giving you the joy?

The Orphean will not be cheap either. All costs are calculated in the same way as with all systems and related materials. If the basic material is less expensive than my customers will get the same advantage.

This is the same reason why all Oris horns cost the same. The raw material and time needed to create each of them is basically the same and therefore no reason to price them to size or emotion.

Either way, the Orphean does give me much pleasure and so does AER but in a different way. There are many beautiful women in this world for which I could settle...

If the 250 horn is the same price as the other horns and the driver is cheaper - what of the other components that will make up the Orphean? Am I missing something here? A new product can't be cheaper than previous models!?!

You should feel lucky that I am not commercial "talented" like most high-end companies are. I am not making things extremely expensive trying to fool people who do not trust their own ears.

How many among us think that more expensive equipment (as usual in the so called "high-end" world) is always better? :fool:

I am not thinking like that and neither should you or anybody else for that matter!

All I offer is value for your money. In my world where things are more expensive then this is only because it is not mass machined production but made precisely by hand, using optimal materials which takes quality time and therefore is costing more money. Time is money, using quality materials is costing extra and so forth....

BMS drivers are stamped CNC mass production made drive units, they make hundreds each week and that highly reduces the price. These are not perfect, hence the reason why I need to modify them and having had a terrible time to tune the filter towards its present performance!

I could have my own compression drivers made in the way I would like to see them but then they will be much more expensive, unless I can sell hundreds a week...

...buy a DIY kit I'll have to find someone to do at least the electronic work for me... i hardy know which is the hot end of a soldering iron. I'm only looking at DIY to reduce costs, not the least being shipping a huge wooden box to the opposite side of the world.

The filter for the Orpheam will only be sold completed in combination with the modified BMS drive units, no soldering problems should be expected with that...

Hi Fu_man,

2 weeks... maybe that will give me some time to sell some unused gear..

Perhaps you'll have even more time, you're not the only one with great interest. Orders will be prepared one at the time from the first order and then down following the list...
