Foobar V0.9.2 versus V0.83 (Off Topic)

by Bert @, Tuesday, July 04, 2006, 22:36 (6504 days ago)

Hi All,

I have done several experiments with several different asio.dll drivers (only changed these in V0.8.3) and compared that to Foobar V0.9.2.

In all situations I prefer V0.9.2 (even with the volume control present).

I hear more the things I like, life recordings are more alive, more space all around and less "pressure" on my ears. V0.9.2 shows more resolution (i.e. less "flat" sounding) and sounds more real to me (less "compressed").

The differences are not huge but to me and within my system these are big enough.

I also found the error why V0.9.2 is not buffering as it should. in fact it does do this but the value should be larger. The menu tells you to put the number in kB but in reality this should be in byte. 100Mb should then be entered as 100000000 to get the buffering working.

The usd-audio driver will remain in the system too...

Don't forget to set the priority to real-time (only manual possible with V0.9.2) in the taskmanager.

Some other tweaks that can be done is to "strip" the computer. If you have XP running then you can find lots of hints and tips at:

http://www.musicxp.net/tuning_tips.php

Note: If you do not know what you're doing or when you are not sure then do not try to change the specific setting!

Bert

Foobar V0.9.2 versus V0.83

by Brookshire @, Friday, July 21, 2006, 07:42 (6488 days ago) @ Bert

Hi Bert,

I concur with your findings. I also prefer V0.9.2 as well. The difference is heard very easily.

Now there is V0.9.3 beta available. I have not tried it.

Hi Adrian,

Did you ever tried Steinberg Wavelab as player? It sounds better then
anything I tried (Foobar,WinAmp,Cooledit).

Never heard of it. In what combination do you use that player? Sound Card, external DAC and did you try foobar as suggested lately?

I will lookup Steinberg Wavelab and see what it brings here...

Foobar V0.9.2 versus V0.83

by Bert @, Monday, July 24, 2006, 09:58 (6484 days ago) @ Bert

Hi Adrian,

I just checked and I don't think that I am going to get that package. Its too complex for just playing my music.

If you're around then bring your PC setup with you to compare or when I am near you we could check it at your place. Its too expensive for just a test and I am not so sure if it sounds better...

Foobar V0.9.2 versus V0.83

by Flecko @, Monday, August 28, 2006, 23:37 (6449 days ago) @ Bert

Hi Bert,
Sorry for the late answer, I was on holidays.

I just checked and I don't think that I am going to get that package. Its
too complex for just playing my music.

It gets easy when you used to it. I use an option is called "easy audio cd" or something like this. I'm not shure how it calls exactly, I have the programm not installed at the moment...my hifi is not ready at the moment :(
But when you use this it's like a playlist. The only disadvantage is you can not pause when u are listening, but who wants anyway? When you are just listening to 44khz 16bit files you can use the option "audio montage" to make a playlist. Here you can even pause.

A big advantage of this programm is that you can use high quality professional plugins like an EQ (Voxengo's WYSIWYG EQ sounds realy great you don't hear it is "on") to make some correktions to the sound.

My setup is an RME Hammerfall HDSP 9632 as digital source and a Hoerwege PCM 1704 DA-converter (with accumulator). Full active AOS Studio 24 XL with Visaton Basses. Thel saw 30 crossover with accu-current. Thel IQ-Amp for bass amplification and a Helix four channel carhifi amp (No humming, cheap and sounds unbelievebal great), so I have nearly pure accu-current. With this setup I have made a very intense test over days/or weeks??? :)

If you're around then bring your PC setup with you to compare or when I am
near you we could check it at your place.

If you near you are welcome...but at the moment my hifi is not ready. I moved and the new rooms are to small, it is a shame. Meanwhile I am hearing over a build-in soundcard with a yamaha stereo amp and cheap fullrangers...you wouldn't hear any differences. But tell me, perhaps I have somthing made up untill then...

Its too expensive for just a test
and I am not so sure if it sounds better...

There is a demo version. http://www.musica.at/cgi-bin/shareware/jump.pl?ID=203

Hi,

and I am not so sure if it sounds better...

I agree with Adrian that Wavelab sounds better. Leaner ... more clean ... less jitter.

Foobar V0.9.2 versus V0.83

by DeMarko @, Sunday, July 23, 2006, 21:06 (6485 days ago) @ Bert

Somehow the options "Play in Foobar2000" and "Enqueue in Foobar2000" (when I click on the right mouse button on a music album in Windows XP) are now gone once I switched from Foobar 8.3 to 9.2... kind of inconvenient to what I am used to.

...Hm... is there a solution?

For information:
I have installed and tried Foobar 9.2 with foo_out_asio.dll (downloaded from Foobar site and I hope it is for the 9 version) and demo version of usb-audio.de.
Must say that this was installed on a notebook not optimised for audio playback and than compared to my current setup (foobar 8.3 and, I think, foo_out_dsound_ex.dll). The first impression is that the new combination sounds crisper with lower noise floor and the older combination sounds rounder and more "melow" / warmer. I am not sure what I prefer but I will give the new combo a full try a bit later.

Dmitry.

I found out the same but you can fool Windows.... (or edit the registery....).

You should first uninstall V09.2...

...then install V0.83 (give the directory a name like Foobar V0.93) so that the links are working again for that directory. Then install V0.92 in a renamed directory (whatever the name is but keep it in the same main directory as the other foobar folder).

Now empty the whole directory of the previously installed V0.83 (do not rename!!) and copy all the V09.2 files into the empty directory.

Should work again...

Foobar V0.9.2 versus V0.83

Bert, you have answers as always!

One thing is not clear, why rename the directory.

Here is what I did + things for your manual

- Uninstalled Foobar 9.2
- Installed Foobar 8.3 in Foobar2000 folder somewhere on the C: drive (not in the Program Files)
- Created a new folder in this Foobar2000 folder (called it AAA for example)
- In this AAA folder installed Foobar 9.2
- Deleted all files/folders from Foobar2000 folder except the AAA folder
- Cut-pasted all files and folders from AAA to Foobar2000 folder

QUESTION: Is this what you meant?
QUESTION: Do I need to re-install usb-audio.de after that you think??

Now additional things to do with Foobar2000
- Installed usb_audio driver from usb-audio.de
- Downloaded from Foobar2000.com foo_out_asio.dll (zip file to be unzipped)
- Copied file foo_out_asio.dll to the Components folder in the Foobar2000 folder
- In the Foobar2000 Preferences changed the following:
- In the Advanced changed the File Buffer to 200 000 000
- In the Playback for Regain features chose None
- In the Playback Output, Asio Virtual Devices, Add New: chose usb-audio.de Asio Driver
- In the Playback Output, in the Output Devices chose ASIO: usb-audio.de ASIO driver
- In the Playback Outbut Buffer Length left at 1000ms
- Dither is also left unticked

This is it I hope!

Cheers,
Dmitry.

Forgot the points about cleaning the Components directory and deleting the deleted items from Recycle Bin!!! Now, I hope, this is it as I see it.

AH! Plus
- Clean the Foobar2000 Components folder: delete files to leave only the following files:
foo_cdda.dll
foo_input_std.dll
foo_ui_std.dll
foo_out_asio.dll
- Delete the deleted above files from the Recycle Bin

This is it I hope!

Hi Dmitry,

One thing is not clear, why rename the directory.

As long as the directory has a different name then it is okay. If not then it should be renamed...

QUESTION: Is this what you meant?

Yes

QUESTION: Do I need to re-install usb-audio.de after that you think??

No should still be there. Its not related to the sofware installed with Foobar. The only relation is the asio driver from foobar that needs usb-audio to work.

This is it I hope!

Sounds okay to me. Is all working? Including the right-click menu options?

Hi Bert,

options?

Oh yeah, you are the man! Had to figure out what to do and spent quite a bit of time, hence decided to put up a "manual" at one place.

Cherio,
