Singular cabinet? (Singular)

by Rick B. @, Tuesday, November 28, 2006, 02:51 (6331 days ago)

First, thanks to Bert & Gasper for the responses to my earlier questions.

It would seem that I'll have to save my pennies for awhile before I can swing the Oris horns.

In the mean time I'm thinking of building a pair of the Singular cabinets for my DX-3's. I have enough 3/4" birch ply to build them on hand already.

What I'd like to know is, first, will my DX-3's work in these enclosures?

Second, those of you that have heard these, what is your impression of them?

How's the bass?

I'd truly appreciate input on this gentlemen.

Thanks

Rick

Hi Rick,

They'll work but do not expect too much energy in the bass without EQ

Which enclosures did you build before for the DX3's and what did you not like about those?

Ciao,

Bert

Hi Bert,

The first enclosures I made were Voight Pipes. They didn't sound very good.

So I built a large pair of boxes styled after something that Terry Cain had experimented with. I found his musings archived on a speaker forum, I don't remember which one. Anyway while they performed better I still am not happy with them. In fact I'm not presently even listening to them.

It's possible that my office where they reside is not a good room for them I don't know. I built bass traps and first reflection absorbers for them but they still don't sound like I'd like them to. I should probably take them out in the livingroom and try them. That is a much larger space.

I guess you'd say I'm disappointed in them. They just don't sound like I'd hoped they would. My little 2 watt SET amp is in a closet and I'm back listening to my 21 year old Carver receiver & my 25 year old Infinity speakers. :(

As you'll see below I've shared some pictures of my latest cabinets for the DX-3's. Their big, and their pretty, they just don't sound so hot. :(

What does not sound good, what are you missing with these enclosures?

Looking great though! :)

They still are to light in the bass dept.

I've bought a pair of "Gizmo's" from Decware and that did tame the "shout" problem the Lowthers suffered from.

Overall I'm not pleased with their tonal quality, as I've said little bass and still just a tad shrill.

It's a shame cause I thought I'd done a good job with my less-is-more approach. Didn't break the bank either.

My minimalist system consisted of the Lowthers.

Bert, when you say 'EQ', what are you refering to exactly?

Thanks

Hi Rick,

Bert, when you say 'EQ', what are you refering to exactly?

If it is the tonal balance you do not like then this can be partly corrected (EQ) with a "filter".

Rick, just in case, 'EQ' means Equalized.

Dear Rick!

I think that the Singular will be another by-pass.

If you have enough material to build it than try, but better wait and save a little bit more money for horns (you will be surprissed what can "a proper design of plastic" do :clapping: )- it's worth to wait:yahoo:

Regards,

Gasper.

Hello Gasper,

I'm sure that you're right. But, with the holidays & TAXES right around the corner audio expenditures will have to wait. I probably should feed the kids first. :)

Besides as I've said I have material and as a cabinetmaker by trade they'll be easy for me to produce.

Take care.

PS; Are yours posted in the showroom section? I'd love to see them.
