Can anyone give an opinion on Lowther PM4A Alnico drive units with upgraded AER cones, compared to say AER MD2 or 3's. There are some on audiogon - used in an Oris 150 horn with Berts phase plugs.

Lowther PM4A with AER cones

Hi fu_man,

Can anyone give an opinion on Lowther PM4A Alnico drive units with upgraded
AER cones, compared to say AER MD2 or 3's. There are some on
audiogon - used in an Oris 150 horn with Berts phase plugs.

These have a slightly lower Qts than the MD2 or MD3. The linear excursion is a bit lower too due to the shorter pole plate of the PM4A magnets.

The combination needs support under the magnet, the frame is too weak to hold the heavy magnet. Soundwise these have the same "signature" though.

Ciao,

Bert

I use the PM4A ticonal magnet driver on my 150's and like it very much. In my experience it is a little bit more aggressive sounding (I would like to say dynamic) compared to the MD1 and 3 in my room. However I now use the DEQX with it and the sound is quite nice.
