Bert's Super Sub (BD-Design)

by RichardofOz @, Saturday, August 25, 2007, 04:35 (6082 days ago)

Hi Bert and everyone,

I have been a guest visitor for some time now. I have enjoyed the site and am hopeful to get a chance to listen to Bert's creations in the future.

Two questions.

1) Bert, when do you hope to have the DIY loudspeaker pages up on the new site? I am missing the techporn (hope that is allowable)

2) Bert, your Super Subs are very interesting. Thanks for answering my quetion earlier but I ask it here as I suspect others might also be wondering. I understand you had built 150Hz and down horns. Then you decided to fill the front opening with those arrays of drivers. So I am guessing that the speakers are a sort of pannel speaker with a sealed non-resonate box. Because of the number of drivers each is only just operating so should be very linear (capability approx. 1600 W being driven by 30 W if I recall the specs correctly.) Does that sum things up about right?

Looking forward to more reports as these "beasts" settle in.

Keep up the good work,

Richard.

Welcome Richard,

Good question and having so many things to do and to explore (also related to the future DIY-pages, many things changed) this is a matter of priorities...

guessing that the speakers are a sort of pannel speaker with a sealed

Yep, correct. The 30W is more than enough though (to prevent breaking down the building and myself!). :)

Looking forward to more reports as these "beasts" settle in.

There will be reports coming if all who experienced this will write down their thoughs...

Hello Bert,

I would also like to know more about the sound of your super sub !!

You mention the horns they replace needed time to build up in the room? Wouldnt that mean they were generating some kind of standing wave in the room?

You didnt use the BD15 driver! I can imagine thats because of the cost.
But if you did do you think you would notice any difference ? I suppose you are crossing them low.

Rgds, Collin

Hi Collin,

I would also like to know more about the sound of your super sub !!

Come over and have a listen...

room?

Actually not the needed time but the needed length to built up the wave properly. The horn is a 1/4 lambda horn meaning that the other 3/4 has to be done by the room (walls, floor and ceiling).

You didnt use the BD15 driver! I can imagine thats because of the
cost.

They don't fit optimal in there. With 12" drivers I could create a bigger total moving diaphragm.... when the BD12's will be ready then I might exchange the Beyma's for those though.

But if you did do you think you would notice any difference ? I suppose
you are crossing them low.

I think it will make a difference, sometimes I can hear the Beyma's making their own "sound"... I will coat them all one of these days as one reason for that is the paper which is a bit too weak (not stiff enough) to withstand the pressure.

I only use them below 30Hz (48dB crossover) and somehow, you can hear the character of the drivers when playing them "loud" if you pay attention to it.

I am very happy with them as they are though but there are always means to improve things further.

Hallo Bert,

I just happen to be in the neighborhood tomorrow morning! I didnt realize that until now. Its a long drive so it would be perfect if i could have a brief demonstration. I'd also like to hear the BD-15's if possible. Im going to build a straight horn from about 80-100 to 1000 Hz. and i'm looking for a solution for the bottom octave.

Is this possible? I can call you if you let me know.

Regards, Collin

Thanks for having me over Bert.

They definitely sound powerful.

I do think the chair was vibrating a bit too much

If you ever replace the drivers with the BD's let me know, i might like to use some of them for my new house.
