Bass amp - power needed - Bert's WWWboard

Re-starting thread since the other got off-track.

Bert et al,

I'm still looking for a bass amp for my Orphean Compact Ref bass bins (which, by the way, are fantastic!)

I have tried an ICE amp (Bel Canto). Not bad at all, perhaps I should have kept it, but I find the midbass very 'dry' with ICE amps.

Am now using a Rogue 88 KT88 tube amp. 60W ultralinear. Pretty good too, but it has some noise! It seems it is not made for 100 dB speakers.

I am now eyeing some 'vintage' class A solid-state amps like Threshold and Forte.

The Forte Model 4 is 50W into 8 ohms - so probably 25W into 16. Is that enough power?? Would this be a good choice?

If not that, the Threshold 400A is 100W into 8 ohms, 50W into 16. I could go that route but only want to if the extra power is really beneficial. I don't listen too loudly - 95 dB peaks - but my room is very large.

Sorry for the slow reply, I have been out the office for a few days...

Go for a gainclone variant with at least a 300VA powersupply per channel and enough capacitance using quality capacitors or wait for the BD30MkII which will provide good and clean bass...

I am getting the new caps this week and will built up a pair of BD30's and compare those to the original BD30's. I am expecting good quality sound from those and will report back about it...

Do not start with vintage amps or tubes in the bass unless you do not like clean, dynamical and tight bass.
