X-Fi HighEnd Veldhoven (Orelo/Orelino)

by Bert @, Thursday, August 09, 2012, 19:50 (4276 days ago)

It's been a while since I have shown up on HighEnd shows so it is about time to show my face again! I was invited for this X-fi show which this time seems interesting enough to participate.

I have never been at a Dutch show before simply because of the narrow minded people usually organizing those fairs around here asking ridiculous prices for participating with ideas purely for commercial purposes and that is not me.

This time it proved to be different and compares a lot more with the RMAF at their first years when they were still relatively small with more enthusiasts than just commercial guys demonstrating their stuff like they always do.

Located at "de Koningshof" in Veldhoven as the banner shows.

http://x-fi-audioshow.nl/deelnemers/bd-design

Interesting enough to participate where I can express myself and show everything I think is needed for a good demo without being restricted by stupid rules taking away all the fun... :fool:

Goal this time is to demonstrate how the least compromised audio system can change static noise into real live music.

For that we will bring:

  • the famous Phasure NOS1 PC DAC (XXHighEnd)
  • my prototype 200Watt balanced BD30SPR main amplifiers (based on bridged BD30 amplifiers)
  • my recently developed (at this stage still a prototype) 115dB loudspeaker system

This topic is dedicated to this show having all future information gathered to keep you'll updated about our presentation. Yes, our presentation because it will be the only interesting one to follow...

Bert

PS I will need a name for my new speakers... anyone having good suggestions?

Grand Libre, Legend, Legacy, Thor...?

Hi Bert,

Good idea to go to X-Fi! Time to show your developments to a bigger audience!
Since you more or less started with Oris, maybe Hathor (i.a. Egyptian goddess of music) is a nice name for your latest creation...

Hope to see you in Eindhoven!

Thanks for the suggestion, I'll add it to the list! I will add Quasar to that list too as this somehow illustrates the perfect point source as gate to...?

O well, still plenty of time to decide!

some thoughts:

it looks like a butterfly
a grand b
or a bird, any grand bird
or a space craft, grand craft

accept for that wash basin in the middle which, once painted, will still be a focal point and that could trigger another associations and be the basis of a name

but you wanted a point source association, hm, Volcano or Vulcan or any modification of that V - is the shape of your front horn too...

Butterfly...

by Bert @, Saturday, August 11, 2012, 09:05 (4274 days ago) @ DeMarko

...indeed, but a bit too romantic. I watched the movie Battleship yesterday using this prototype (mono bass and a second Orphean horn for having stereo) and no butterfly can stand that violent force...pfeww :bass:

but you wanted a point source association, hm, Volcano or Vulcan or any modification of that V - is the shape of your front horn too...

Good thinking though and it sure helps to make up my mind a bit easier. Thanks!

Of course compromised but hardly as much as you will think when you see it and hear it play...

More info about this BDX system later... :secret:

And you will be repeating that over and over again once you'll heard it doing its things...

Reality is almost an understatement but since others claim and do not fulfil at all then I can easily make that statement!

Its not about quantity at all, it is really feeling and sensing every detail as in real life. Hearing is believing... and again, I should have done this years ago!

Change of mind...

by Bert @, Saturday, September 01, 2012, 11:19 (4253 days ago) @ Bert

...Wave is okay but not that ok after a while.

But I have found another name fitting its description more than Wave.

ORELO

I think that this one will sound good after a while. People see a butterfly, a book, even an elefant for its "ears" and that last one triggered the new name.

Orelo is a translation into Esperanto and means EARS and fits the range too (Oris, Orphean...).

Slot loading

by anubisgrau, Monday, October 01, 2012, 15:26 (4223 days ago) @ Bert

Very clever use of slot loading. Shame they are so big so only the GCGCL rooms will apply. But slot loading is almost an obligatory thing these days to avoid humungous bass horns. I will soon try a push-pull slot loading with high hopes to avoid subhorn & mid bass horn with it...

X-Fi HighEnd Veldhoven

by John S @, Saturday, September 29, 2012, 23:37 (4224 days ago) @ Bert

Hi Bert and others,

Today I had the privilege listening to the new prototype Wave speaker system at the Veldhoven X-Fi High End show. Certainly one of the best sounds of the show, to my ears at least. Despite the eight 15 inch woofers, not a system that blows you away with loud or very deep bass. Natural, effortless, dynamic and uncoloured (mid)bass comes to my mind, despite room conditions far from ideal.

I little strange to experience that the Wave seems quit silent at the back, despite the open baffle system :-)

I couldn't agree more John! I went to Veldhoven today and experienced the same musical freedom. Despite the noise of visitors, the sound was fabulous.

I want to visit Bert soon to listen at his place with my own music.

Frank

Hi Steve,

I am still recovering but check out the link and scroll down for some pictures and more comments.

http://www.phasure.com/index.php?topic=2283.0;all

For me all was a bit of a blurrr as I was very tired getting things done for that show. The last weeks working 18 hours a day until sunday evening when I dropped in bed only moments after my return back home...

:heat:

I am getting too old for this! Next time I should not build a complete new system in less than 2 months time and show that to the world.

Never expected it to work out this well though... :clapping:

That is some fantastic feedback!

by samoore @, Wednesday, October 03, 2012, 15:19 (4221 days ago) @ Bert

It looks like you might be building a lot more of those in the future! One question, how do you think a half baffle would work? For example, only two BD-15 on each side with the orphean horn sitting on top.

before bert chimes in, i think it would work but only you would need more EQ in the lowest range. my 2 cents. bert?

Hi Steve,

One question, how do you think a half baffle would work? For example, only two BD-15 on each side with the orphean horn sitting on top.

Yes, no problem. 3 major drawbacks where one is less overall sensitivity, maximum output (still more than enough for a livingroom!) and less dynamic because the smaller physical horn shifting up its lowest "boosted" frequency making it less dynamic in the mid-bass.

Still more fun to hear compared to a closed box though...

Efficiency?

by anubisgrau, Thursday, October 04, 2012, 16:21 (4220 days ago) @ Bert

Bert, what do you reckon to be an efficiency of the bass system from the pic (with 4 drivers per side)?

105dB at 1m

Postivite?

by Bert @, Wednesday, October 10, 2012, 15:07 (4214 days ago) @ samoore

For now they are playing at home and definitely 300% better than they were capable at the show.

While tweaking and further testing (didn't had the time to do this properly before the show) I corrected a few errors and improved several other "settings" as well bringing the system totally in balance now and boy, what a difference that brought.

Listening with a BIG smile on my face!

so, when are you going to show them in the USA?

DoNo, these speakers will never leave my room! :yeah:

But perhaps next year with a more commercial version? The used principle should work in different configurations as well...

Hi Bert,

What's your conclusion after the show?

The Unlimited version at 28k is way over my budget...
What options do you plan to offer?
Drivers, horns, crossover and plans as a cost effective solution?
Any discount for all the BD15s?
A starter-kit with only two BD15s per side and upgradeable to four BD15s?

Will you offer the 16 Ohm BMS-driver instead of 8 Ohm? I'm into OTL tube amplifiers and they just love higher and flatter impedance curve than anything else.

Hi Kim,

What's your conclusion after the show?

Better performance next time but not a total loss at all. It was pretty good already but it could have been better if I had more time to spend with them before the show!

Yes, most parts can be bougth for a DIY version.

Any discount for all the BD15s?

Normally yes, depending on the grand total.

A starter-kit with only two BD15s per side and upgradeable to four BD15s?

Can be done this way but perhaps better to save some and go full (part of the magic comes from the relative large horn mouth).

Will you offer the 16 Ohm BMS-driver instead of 8 Ohm? I'm into OTL tube amplifiers and they just love higher and flatter impedance curve than anything else.

The crossover is designed for the 8 ohm driver (impedance swings between 8 - 13 ohms) which should not be a problem for your OTL.
