Lacquer Paint on Oris 150 (Oris Horns)

I am patiently waiting for my Oris 150's to arrive next week and am wondering if any of you painted them yourself. I was thinking about spraying lacquer. Has anyone else sprayed lacquer on these horns? If so, any suggestions as to preparation etc.

Hi,

Yes, I have sprayed the ORIS150 myself in purple/blue metallic. As I am not an experienced sprayer, I found it hard to get it right. Eventually I got a more than an acceptable result. It took me many and many spraying cans to get the colour even.

So my advice is; you can get it right but it is not easy (when you are a starter). And then I would opt for a solid colour (and not metallic or pearlescent) for your best chance.

Good luck!

Thank you. I would be using an HLVP gun, and I'm no expert, but have sprayed other horns and speakers over the years. These are by far the most expensive horns I have owned and just don't want to ruin them.

BTW, did you use any primer?

Hi,

Oh, you have experience in spraying, then you know which task you are facing (in contrast to me)
I did use plastic primer, but in hindsight I would have better off by using thicker primer to smooth out any irregularities on the horn surface.

Good luck!

After much thought on the subject, I decided to try and find a reasonably priced local painter. I was able to find one and had them painted in Pearl Black. Standard auto primer, pearl, color and clearcoat.

They turned out very nice and is now time to put them together and try them out.

Nice!

I hope that you had the ring mounted to the horns prior to painting? If not then you can't use the supplied glue and you'll need something else that sticks on the painted surface.

Bert,

Yes, as per your instruction I mounted the rings prior to taking them to the painter. I put them together yesterday and am about to fire them up today. Of course, it will take a while to tweak and test, but I should be enjoying them in a few days.

These things sure look big next to my bass bin with dual 15" Eminence Kappalite LF woofers!
