tweaks on the horns (Orphean)

by robert, Saturday, July 19, 2014, 14:35 (3540 days ago)

First i must say that my Orphean horns sound wonderful and it are my best speakers i ever have and also i never heard somewhere a better sounding speaker

But did someone ever try to damping the horns?
i was thinking of putting dive lead on the horns you can buy this as soft lead in diving shops its a bag filled with lead pellets
wil this made difference in sound?
i just ask its not that i need another sound but is it worth trying this ?

Indeed they are... ;-)

Damping the horns will make the sound more dull and fixing them tight will make them colour the sound. Best way is to make is to leave them free laying on top helping to transport/ground the energy away.

O.K
not a good idea then
dull sound and colored sound is not what we want

Do you have other tips to get the best out of the horns?
like placement toe in or toe out distance,
cable, amplifier , pre amplifier and so on i now this is also personal
but you try so much and designed the horns.

My best experience so far with amps are a 4 watt OTL from transcendent sound
ultra hum free and very good sound
i used first the grounded grid preamp from them also
but now i like a passive t.v.c preamp more its more open and fluid
de active preamp is more dynamic tough.

Hi Robert,

Do you have other tips to get the best out of the horns?

Get the best source available, this is where it all starts! The speakers as you have it now will clearly show you what is changed there.

like placement toe in or toe out distance

Personal and depending on listening distance as well. Did you ever tried to listen up close? ;-)

You can also move the speakers half way the room and point them to the rear wall and listen only to the reflections coming back to you. If you like a big special image... ;-)

Decoupling equipment, clean mains, decent signal earthing...

No i am not gone do that
But i like close listening i get a little more balanced and even sound then and a little more weight to the music.
also left right happenings appear not so big.

Is there a minimum listening distance with these horns?

I would say minimal 1m... ;-)

But that is just the Orphean, the integration of the bass and mid-high section need a bit more distance so then 2-3m sitting down would be minimum.

Oke my best place is around 2,60m
i can sit on 8 m but from 2,60 till 3m i get the best sound
on 2.60 i get the best integration and the most complete and balanced sound
