Speaker Wire (Silver vs. Copper) (BD-Design)

by GC, Wednesday, March 02, 2005, 00:10 (6968 days ago)

Hello,

I'm in thre process of building a compact ref system using 200's loaded w/ Fostex FE206E (aspiring to AER drivers someday :-)

I've been going back and forth about what type of speaker wire I should use to drive the horns and I'm thinking of constructing a pair from 99.99% solid core silver w/ Teflon insulation (it's available in 22 AWG to 30 AWG).

Before I make the investment, has anyone had positive or negative experience using silver wire in an Oris setup. Would Copper (perhaps CCC) be a better match for this application?

Does anyone have any suggestions as to cable geometry? Twisting vs. brading...

I'll be using a Korneff SE45 to drive the horns.

Thanks in advance for any insight.

Cheers,
Hat

This is a mater of taste. I've hurd that a silver is more "clean" and "detailed" than copper. But also depend on purity of material. I use silver interconect Kimber KCAG and copper/silver Nordost cable for speakers. If you ask me I would personaly go for ALL silver including wires in amp./player, caps, transformers, silver voice coil...So try before you buy - I always say that if there isn't any significant diference in sound to your ears than you can save extra money for something more critical (drivers, amp, CD player, better tubes,...).

Have a nise day,
Gasper.

I use silver cables throughout, except for the Oris/DM3 speaker cable, which is the oval 9, multistrand, and of copper. The sound is clean, clean, clean.

A silver wire

This stuff has been good to my ears
in many different applications:

Speaker Wire (Silver vs. Copper) <

According to my calculation, using silver in stead of copper would give you a reduced resistance of 2,49 * 10^-5 ohms per speaker (with a 3 meter speaker-wire). When your silver will corrode the effect will be negated.

Thank you for all your insight. It looks like I'll end up constructing a simple pair of 2m parallel runs of 24 AWG solid silver wire to drive my horns.

I appreciate the feedback from everyone. I'll report back once I get things up and running (should be in the next couple of weeks :-) )

Hi Hat,

experience using silver wire in an Oris setup. Would Copper (perhaps CCC)

It depends on your system what to use. I have used Silver in the past and lately I do prefer copper. Silver gives more transparancy, detail and such but also makes the system sound a more technical, less musical.

For Fostex drivers Silver is better because these can use some extra freshness and transparancy, the AER drivers don't need it.

Cabling is the pepper and salt of the system.... use what sounds best in that particular system.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to cable geometry? Twisting vs.
brading...

I prefer thin wire with solid core which are twisted but that's just my preference.

Ciao,

Bert

valuable insight. thanks!

great analogy :-)

i'm curious, how tight/loose do you typically twist your wires? how many turns per meter or foot?

Thanks Burt!

Hi Hat,

I don't count, I just twist them...the reason for me is to have the ground twisted around the positive lead thinking that its reducing picking up signals and distortion from the air. Probably increasing the capacity but that will only effect frequencies not provided by my system...

Mostly there are other things having much more effect to the quality of your sound and perception. Use good sounding and clean contacts (allthrough the system), try to move the speakers 1 feet closer or further away, exchange the spikes under them or replace them for cones, clean your records properly (like done with a Nitty Gritty), move the table in front of you that reflects the sound in between you and the system, close or open the curtains if you have them, get a good mains filter (sound wise, not review wise...), etc...

Enjoy the music... ;-)

Bert

My thoughts exactly. :Y:

check, check & check.

I always do ;-)

Thanks for the advice.
