Who runs kernel streaming in foobar? (Off Topic)

by GC, Thursday, April 28, 2005, 19:19 (6909 days ago)

Hi All,

I've recently completed a DIY based USB interface I2S to DIY based 1541A DAC.
Foobar runs in DirectSound without any problem but not in kernel streaming very distorted sound.
Revisited the old forum archive but couldn't find any help at all.

Is anyone really running foobar in kernel streaming?
Any information will be very much appreciated.

BTW, I've ended up (graduated SACD with heavily modded SCD-1 starting from VSEI kits and finally passive analog stage - transformer w/LC filter great sound!)
Now it's the time to challenge PC transport.

Who runs kernel streaming in foobar?

by GC, Thursday, April 28, 2005, 19:35 (6909 days ago) @ GC

Hi Kohjin,

I use DirectSound 2.0, I can't get KS to work at all (not even with a 20ms buffer). They do mention that it is a very experimental driver, I guess is it a common problem that it does not always work well...

Ciao,

Bert

Kernel streaming here (E-mu 0404 AES-EBU/SPDIF out -> Behringer 8024 -> battery-powered non-OS TDA1543). No problems here (also when Behringer is removed inbetween).

Hi Niels,

KS works well with the soundcard present in my laptop but not through the TwinDAC+. Not a problem though, Direct Sound performs extremely well in my configuration... :)

Did you try to listen to the differences between KS and DS?

Who runs kernel streaming in foobar?

Hi Bert and Niels,

Thanks for the response, I was surprised most of all in this forum use KS.

KS works well with the soundcard present in my laptop but not through the
TwinDAC+. Not a problem though, Direct Sound performs extremely well in my
configuration... :)

It looks the driver checks the type of USB chip installed.
The error in my case (PCM2706) shows "Error querying device capabilities".
I will stick with DS2.0 no problem, should I run the default Buffer length 1000ms?
I set "Full file buffering" 200000KB and "priority" realtime as suggested by Bert.

Hi Kohjin,

The buffer length of 1000ms works okay. The 200.000 file buffering setting works well for just playing tracks, live CD's when played all will cause a pause in between the tracks, if that is a problem than lower the buffer size to 30k or 40k until it works better.

BTW, don't forget the settings as described in thread:

http://www.bd-design.nl/forum/index.php?id=9434

Besides this I created some pictures showing the most important settings in foobar.

Download the latest foobar version and change the standard configuration looking like below...

The left DSP window should be completely empty!

Thanks, really informative.

Wow it tells everything, thanks again.

I will continue to evaluate how USB audio beats.
Tomorrow, I will replace a simple 12MHz clock by an external professional DDS RF synthesizer together with transoformed passive analog stage.
I'm listening through 3rd order 35KHz bessel active filter + OP amp w/NFB, stock kits configulation.
The sound is fine but I like passive analog solution which might bring much better sound as far as I've learned from SACD project.

Werner, you've triggered the switch very well, thanks!

Hard to find ANY difference.

kernel streaming in foobar is fubar.

by GC, Sunday, May 01, 2005, 01:00 (6907 days ago) @ GC

Kohjin,

I know this isn't helpful, but I just can't resist observing that in regards to kernel streaming foobar is fubar.

Don Reid

P.S. For those unfamiliar with English language military slang, fubar is an acronym for F*ck*d Up Beyond All Recognition.

Who runs kernel streaming in foobar?

Hi,

I installed Foobar yesterday, and Kernel Streaming works like a charm. With an external soundcard that is. In this case this is Firewire connected (would be the same principle as USB).
Didn't touch any buffer.

This is (I think) the latest formal version of Foobar, somewhere from 2004, v 0.8.3 (special).

PS: I'm into the external soundcard (DAC) thing very explicitly, and I am rather surprised that I'm not the only one in this world. :-D
IMO it was only yesterday that a PC was not for audio; today it's the very best basis for real high end. Playing from the harddisk like this, I call "direct sound". You sense it, you hear it.
