Yes, they will but with phase plugs it will perform better.

Is it easy to make the modification on a normal MK1 for installing the phase plugs?

It is almost impossible to drill a hole in the pole piece to use normal phase plugs with a thread to screw it tight but with the new transparent phase plugs you can use double sided tape. The weigth of those plus is very low making that possible.
